What a Woman Wants for Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is just around the corner - a day that strikes fear in the hearts of men everywhere. What do you get your special lady this year? Red roses and a box of chocolates was a great combination in high school, but an adult relationship calls for an adult gift.

If you remember these three things while you are shopping for Valentine's Day, you can be sure your gift will be thoughtful and well-loved.

Show and Tell
A woman wants to know that her man has put some thought and energy into her gift and making Valentine's Day special for her. She wants to see that you spent time in preparation for the evening. It's not about the price tag of your gift; in fact, it is often better to have spent no money and lots of time thinking about Valentine's Day. Grocery store roses and Hershey Kisses may be fine for making up, but February 14 is about making love. Give her flowers in a unique and romantic way. Instead of sending a bunch to her office, strategically plant them in her environment so she will find them throughout the day - put one in her purse or briefcase, one in the refrigerator, one in the medicine cabinet, one in her lingerie drawer, one in her desk at work, one in the visor in her car. Plan a special evening in with a nice dinner that you have prepared or ordered especially for the two of you if it is a very complicated dish (congealed gravy is NOT romantic). Give her a night dedicated to her wants and desires and lots of one-on-one time with you.

Can You Hear Me Now?
The most important job in any relationship is to listen to one another. As my husband often tells me - Men do not always "get" subtle. Women tend to drop clues on a constant basis in everyday talk. When you are at a wedding of a friend she may spend time looking at the flower arrangements and say "I just love yellow flowers! There is something about a bright yellow flower that makes me feel like the sun is shining right on me." Remember this! There will be a test later - when you are ready to order a dozen red roses for her you should remember how she gushed about her love of yellow flowers. I guarantee that she will be impressed that you remembered she likes yellow flowers. This can apply to anything - like a piece of jewelry she adores but would never spend the money on or something unusual she has always wanted to try, like sky diving or couples massage class.

Princess for a Day
All women love to be pampered whether they are used to it or not. A gift certificate to the spa can be just the ticket (earn extra points by finding a spa day for couples) but for real pamper points do it yourself. When you pamper a woman you are taking care of her, you are making her feel good and by taking matters into your own hands, you are showing your love and your willingness to be the one to make her feel good. Every woman likes to be pampered in a different way, so don't be afraid to ask her ahead of time.

Here are some suggestions that almost all women will appreciate: Make a bubble bath for two complete with candles and champagne. If the tub is not roomy enough or she is just not the bath type you can buy a small bottle of massage oil, have her get into a sumptuous new bath robe and give her a back massage. A foot massage or hand massage can be just as good and even more relaxing than a back massage. Just use the massage oil and take long, slow, firm strokes up and down the arm or lower leg. Spend time rubbing in a circular motion on the backs of her hands, between her fingers, on her palms, the tops of her feet, ankles and the ball of her foot.

Remember though that your pampering should be done for her enjoyment alone, not solely as foreplay. Women can sense the difference between being primed for sex and when you are doing it is a genuine act of kindness.

Of course, if your lady's idea of a romantic gift is a three-pound hear-shaped box of candy or just having a night in without the kids, then go for that. The key is to listen to her, provide things she really likes and plan an evening that caters to her. Surprise her with her favorite things instead of the typical Valentines gifts and you are on your way to a Valentine's Day that you will both remember.
